'Jacks Krug Named IHL Rookie Of Month October
November 3, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI.--- Having culminated their initial month of October for the 2009-10 International Hockey League season with an overall mark of 6(3-3-0) totaling 6-points, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have earned some important individual accolades derived from an auspicious pro premiere.
On this date, the Lumberjacks, in conjunction with the International Hockey League, have announced that first-year defenseman MATT KRUG has been named the MEIJER / IHL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH for the month of October.
KRUG, 24, is enjoying his first-ever pro season, having arrived on the Muskegon scene as a late entry during the Lumber-jacks annual training camp sessions. The rugged 6-0, 215lb native of the Detroit suburb of Southfield, MI, achieved an utterly stellar October, emerging precociously as a major bulwark on the teams retooled and revamped defense.
In the 6-games his team played for the 10th month of the calendar year, he averaged a point a game, collecting 6-total points on 1-goal, 5-assists with 13-PIM, 10-SOG and a league-best +7 rating. Included in his months workload of accomplishments were a brilliant 4-points performance in the Jacks home opening night on October 17th as he spearheaded his team to a 9-3 dismissal of the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. He was hailed and heralded the #2 Star in that contest.
Krug completed the month with 5-consecutive plus games and did not have a minus game for the entire first month of the campaign. Moreover, the former collegiate standout at both Wayne State U., and Robert Morris U., is ranked at the top of the summit in rookie scoring while, at the same time, also sharing the point-scoring leadership in the IHL among all league defensemen. In overall IHL league-wide point production, he ranks 13th and following the Lumberjacks top scoring line of Robin Bouchard 6(4-5-9), John DiPace 6(2-6-8) and Todd Robinson 6(2-5-7), Krug is Muskegons #4 top leading scorer.
This is his second honor so early in his first pro season as Krug was also acclaimed the IHL Rookie of the Week for the leagues inaugural week of the season back on the weekend of October 16th.
Krug and the Lumberjacks swing back into action this weekend with their first strenuous stretch of 3-games in 3-nights when they travel to Dayton to be hosted by the Gems in a Friday night 7:30 pm duel at Hara Arena before traveling to Quad City Saturday night for a renewal of an old, acerbic archrivalry against the Mallards at 8:00 pm. On Sunday it's another "$5 Sunday at 5" when the Lumberjacks return home to tackle Bloomington at Walker Arena. As is always the case for Sunday home games, every seat for everyone is specially priced for only $5.
