
Two Icehawks Receive IHL Honors For October

PORT HURON, MI - Two Port Huron Icehawks players received monthly honors from the International Hockey League, the league announced today. Right wing Mike Kinnie was named Player of the Month for October and goalie Larry Sterling received Goaltender of the Month honors.
Both players helped lead the Icehawks to a strong 4-1-0-0 record in October.
Kinnie has been on a tear since the beginning of the season. In the Icehawks season opener, he recorded a hat trick to lead the Icehawks to a win over Fort Wayne. His scoring touch continued as he has netted eight total points (6g, 2a) in just five games. Five of his six goals came on the power play.
The 27-year old native of Shelby Township, Michigan currently leads the league in goals (6), power play goals (5) and shots (32). He is riding a three game point streak heading into the fourth week of the season.
Kinnie was also named IHL Player of the Week in the first week of the season. He is in his first season in Port Huron and fifth as a professional.
Sterling was undefeated in October, with a 3-0-0-0 record. He finished the month with a 2.00 goals against average and a.928 save percentage, only allowing six goals during his three starts. He made a total of 77 saves over the three games.
The 26-year old Lake Orion, Michigan native only allowed two goals against in his last two games, helping improve his goals against average to 2.00, which is the best in the league. He is ranked second in the league in save percentage and is tied for second in wins. The goalie is in his sixth year as a professional and third season in Port Huron.
Muskegon defenseman Matt Krug took home IHL Rookie of the Month honors.
The Icehawks return to action this weekend with a pair of home games and a road contest. The Icehawks will host the Bloomington PrairieThunder on both Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., then travel to Dayton to battle the Gems at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Friday is Beatles Night at McMorran Arena. On Saturday, the first 500 fans will receive a free oversized trading card.
