Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
Odessa, TX - The Lubbock Cotton Kings were unable to bounce back from a 2-0 first period deficit and were defeated by the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 Thursday afternoon in a "Kids Game" held at the Ector County Coliseum, and the area students were able to see the Jackalopes grab a share of the Southwest Division lead with the Cotton Kings.
The Jackalopes jumped out to an early lead with a pair of first period goals. Paul Davies weaved his way through the attack zone and was able to stretch the puck past the reach of Kings goaltender Brett Koscielny and slam the puck past the goal line 5:42 into the period. The goal was the first allowed by a Kings goaltender in the last 164:39 and ended Odessa's series shutout sequence of 99:17. The Jacks made it 2-0 with 2:48 remaining in the period with a shorthanded goal of the season, as Matt Cressman and Sebastien Thinel took advantage of Stacey Bauman's turnover and Cressman crashed into Koscielny and was able to get the puck past him in the process. It was just the second shorthanded goal allowed by the Kings this season. The Cotton Kings went scoreless in the first period for the seventh consecutive game.
It was the first time the Jackalopes have taken a lead into the second period this season, and the Cotton Kings were able to cut into the lead. Bobby Brown registered the only goal of the period by redirecting a Stacey Bauman slap shot past Mike Gorman 2:05 into the period. Lubbock out-shot the Jackalopes 12-6 in the frame.
Nolan Graham had a break-away late in regulation and tried to stuff the puck through the glove side, but Gorman made the save to preserve the win. Lubbock went 0 for 7 on the power play, but did go 4 for 4 on the penalty kill and have prevented power play goals in four consecutive games (30 for 30 in the span). The loss drops the Kings record to 5-6-1 and they are winless in their last two games. It was their first loss in a "Kids Game" in franchise history (6-1-0).
The Kings return home Friday to host the Youngstown Steelhounds, for heir first meeting in franchise history. It will be 24 Foundation Night and Team Poster Night, as the Kings will wear special 24 Foundation jerseys to be auctioned after the game and the first 1,500 fans will receive Team Posters compliments of Town & Country. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
