Jacks Fall 7-3 in Battle with Brazos Valley
June 3, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release
The Pump Jacks struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but were unable to hold on in their first full game of the season against the Bombers.
The East Texas Pump Jacks got off to a fast start against the Brazos Valley Bombers on Tuesday night, but forfeited the early lead and ended up losing 7-3 in Bryan.
The Pump Jacks got an early surge in motivation as they watched a helicopter land in center field as part of the Bombers' pregame ring ceremony. James Lear drew a walk to start the game against Brazos Valley starting pitcher Gandy Stubblefield, and T.J. Friedl followed that up with a sharp single into right field.
With a successful double steal, both Lear and Friedl moved up a base to set the table for the heart of the order. After a passed ball allowed Lear to score the first run of the game, Friedl took his place with a steal of third.
A walk issued to Tristan Clarke put runners on the corners for the Jacks' RBI leader Alex Bell, who promptly dumped a single into right field to give East Texas the 2-0 advantage. The Pump Jacks have now scored four of their six runs this season in the first inning.
Tanner Cable followed with a shutdown inning in the bottom of the first, but the Bombers cut the deficit in half with an RBI single the following inning.
After both squads put up goose eggs in the third, Anthony Donovan and Lear put themselves in scoring position for Jake Nash, who brought in the Jacks' third run with a sac-fly to right field.
Brazos Valley then answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single off of reliever Franklin Miller.
The Bombers tied it up at three in the bottom of the sixth on Mitch Holgate's single off of Joe Bernhard, and tacked on four more off Bernhard and Mike Crimi in the bottom of the seventh. The Jacks tried, but ultimately were unable to climb back from the 7-3 deficit.
The Pump Jacks try to earn a series split with the Bombers on Wednesday night to close out what was supposed to be a season-opening six-game road trip before Mother Nature intervened.
The Jacks come home on Thursday for their inaugural game at Irwin UT Tyler Ballpark against the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m., and tickets are selling fast for the team's first-ever game in Tyler. East Texas will conclude their two-game set with Acadiana on Friday, and clash with Brazos Valley at home on Saturday and Sunday.
