East Texas PumpJacks News Release
Beau Day murdered his first home run of the season to help lead that Jacks offense, but unfortunatly the defense could not contain the Brazos Valley Bombers as a five- run seventh inning proved to be the decider in the 6-4 loss.
In baseball, one play or one inning can be the game changer, and that proved to be true for the East Texas Pump Jacks Sunday night in Brazos Valley. The Jacks started out hot but were unable to hold off the Brazos Valley Bombers resulting in a 6-4 loss.
The closely contested game was full of highlights, including three stolen bases from Matthew Dickey (27 on the season), as well as a double from Garrett McMullen, his 15th, moving him four ahead of second place G.R Hinsley, who also broke the RBI record with 44.
The game started on a high note as the Jacks scored first in the top of the third. Dickey opened the inning with a single and swiped second, and Devon Conley followed suit with a single, moving Dickey to third, and then stole second as well. McMullen scorched his 15th double down the opposite field line to score both runners and put the Jacks ahead 2-0.
East Texas added two more in the sixth to jump to a 4-0 lead. Mitch Meyer continued to be a true threat at the plate, proving why he has an impressive .419 batting average by rocketing a double into deep right center. Then, Beau Day gave Pump Jack fans what they have been waiting for, his first home run of the season. With the wind blowing in about 20 miles per hour, the Beaver used all of his 5-foot-10, 230 pounds of muscle to absolutely destroy a 2-2 fastball, driving it about 355 yards over the wall in left to bring home Meyer and extend the Jacks lead.
After five solid innings on the mound allowing only two hits, Riley Toler ceded his first run of the game. The sixth opened with back-to-back walks, and after a ground out and a fly out the Bombers had runners on second and third. Hinsley sharply grounded a ball Mark Mathias at second, which was bobbled allowing the runner to score from third. Conley came to the aid of Toler to limit the damage with a great diving catch on a sinking liner to end the inning.
However, things took a turn for the worse the next inning as the Bombers tallied five runs to take the lead. Toler got into a bit of hot water after two singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position with only one out. The next play proved to be crucial, as Ford Moore grounded a ball to short that was misplayed by Wes Edrington, allowing Ford to reach safely and plating the first run of the inning, the only earned run. Toler battled back to force a pop out for the second out of the inning, but then issued a walk to load the bases full of Bombers. Brett Kauten got the big hit with a well placed single right in front McMullen, who attempted a headfirst dive but the ball bounced over his head, allowing three runs to score. Hinsley drove in the final run of the inning with a single giving Brazos Valley a 6-4 lead, a margin that would carry through to the final.
Don Sullivan relived Toler and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Jacks. Toler was tagged with the loss, pitching 6.2 innings on only 88 pitches, allowing just the one earned run, and six hits.
