The weather cooperated on Sunday night as the Cane Cutters hosted the Woodlands Strykers for a double-header to make up for yesterday's game one washout. Acadiana started the evening a firm 1.5 games up in the Texas Collegiate League standings as they got the twin-bill underway during Faith & Family Night at Fabacher Field.
The Cane Cutters scored 2 runs in each of the 1st, 2nd, and 6th innings, jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead after two innings in game one of the twin-bill. Catcher Mitchell Nau started the scoring for Acadiana, launching a ground rule double over the fence in deep left field, scoring Chance Vincent from 2nd base. After advancing to 3rd on a wild pitch, Nau would score on a Logan Taylor groundout, making the score after 1 inning 2-1. The scoring would continue in the 2nd inning, as Jordie Hein doubled in Chris Sciambra from 2nd, and would later score following an error, pushing the score to 4-1 after just two innings. The Strykers answered with one run in each of the following two innings, before giving up a fifth Acadiana run in the 5th. Another 2 runs in the 6th would lift the Acadiana lead to 7-3 behind 6 solid innings of work from Jake Winston, who gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and struck out 6 batters, earning his 7th win on the season, which is a new Acadiana Cane Cutters record. Though the Cane Cutters only amassed a total of 5 hits, they were able to take full advantage of opportunities on the basepaths to power their 7-run attack.
Acadiana and the Woodlands got off to a slow start in Game 2, as neither team was able to scratch across the plate until the 4th inning, when the Woodlands' Kevin Santana knocked in his 2nd RBI of the night (1st came in Game 1) to put the Strykers on top 1-0. The Strykers would score three more times in the 5th inning, making the score 4-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. The Cane Cutters responded by putting their first run on their board on Jordie Hein's groundout to the 3rd baseman. It would prove to be Acadiana's only run on the night, as the Strykers held on to win the game 4-1, splitting the weekend series doubleheader, 1-1. Starting pitcher Victor Sanchez pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits and striking out 2 batters. Nathan Pugh had 2 hits in the second game, leading the team in that statistic.
The Cane Cutters will return to Fabacher Field for a four-game home stand beginning on Tuesday night when the Victoria Generals roll in for a pair followed by the Brazos Valley Bombers for two.
