Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON - Trailing 2-0 after the first two periods the Muskegon Lumberjacks (7-2-1-0, 15 pts.) were able to score two straight goals in the final period of regulation to force an overtime period. In the end the Green Bay Gamblers (6-5-0-0, 12 pts.) picked up the 3-2 (OT).
No one was able to find the back of the net in the first period, but the Gamblers did so twice in the middle stanza. First, at the 3:15 mark thanks to a goal from Julian Lutz on the power play. Jayson Shaugabay carried the puck into the offensive zone on the near side and carried below the goal line in the corner. Shaugabay slid the puck to the front of the net where Lutz was able to quickly snap it to the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Green Bay doubled up at the end of the second period with a late goal from Lev Katzin. Again, Shaugabay picked up an assist this time on a bank pass out of the defensive zone to Katzin. The Thornhill, ON, CAN native moved up the near side wall through the neutral zone and into the offensive end before placing a shot above the pad, below the blocker of Lukas Sweden (Stockholm, SWE) and to the back of the net.
The third period saw the teams go back and forth with scoring opportunities, but Muskegon was able to find a way to capitalize and tie the game. Sacha Boisvert (Trois-Rivieres, QC, CAN) got the Jacks on the board exactly 12 minutes into the final frame. After stripping a Gambler defenseman of the puck in the neutral zone Boisvert worked in on net and roofed the puck over Adam Gajan's shoulder for his seventh goal of the season.
Boisvert's name appeared on the score sheet again this time with the assist on the game tying goal with just over 3 minutes remaining in regulation. While on the power play Boisvert held the puck after getting it from Matvei Gridin (Kurgan, RUS) who was moving down the near side. Boisvert slid the puck to Gridin who had opened up for a one timer and blasted the puck to the top of the net. For Gridin it is his team and league leading 10th goal of the season to go along with the team and league leading 17th point.
Overtime brought all of the excitement you'd expect from five minutes of 3-on-3 play with opportunities coming at both ends of the ice. Ultimately though it was defenseman Chris Romaine that was able to move past the Jacks in the middle of the ice and get a shot on net that ricochet off of Swedin and into the cage to end the game 3-2 in favor of Green Bay.
Swedin (3-1-1-0) stopped 29 of the 32 shots fired by Green Bay in the start, and helped the Jacks survive into overtime. Gajan (6-3-0-0) earns his sixth win of the season by making an outstanding 37 saves on 39 shots fired by Muskegon.
The teams continue the three-game series tomorrow night at Trinity Health Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Police and Fire Night. For tickets visit MuskegonLumberjacks.com or visit the box office located inside the VanDyke Mortgage Convention Center on game day.
