Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-1 in front of 3,927 fans at Silver Cross Field Wednesday night. The JackHammers improve to 8-16 with the win.

Joliet scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Jayson Drobiak led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single to left field by Kyle Nichols. J.D. Foust then hit a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field. Mike Coles, the RailCats left fielder, moved all the way over to his right to make a diving catch in the Gary bullpen, which sits exposed down the left-field line. Coles made a diving catch and was slow to get up. Jayson Drobiak tagged up and advanced from second to third base and then scored. The JackHammers went up 1-0 on the unusual play.

The JackHammers pushed across two more runners in the sixth inning. With one out, John Lackaff singled and advanced to second base on a single by Chad Ehrnsberger. Both Lackaff and Ehrnsberger advanced one base on a wild pitch by the RailCats reliever Andy Carter. Bubba Smith then hit a two-run double. The JackHammers had a 3-0 lead.

Luis Villarreal got the start and the win for the JackHammers. Villarreal tossed seven and two-thirds innings and scattered eight hits over the course of his time on the hill. Villarreal was helped out by his defense, which turned double plays in the fourth, fifth, and ninth innings to kill RailCat rallies in each inning.

Villarreal did give up one run in the eighth inning. Eric McNamee singled and went to second base on an errant throw by the JackHammers short stop Eddie Romprey. The Joliet lefty retired each of the next two men he faced before being taken out of the game in favor of Amad Stephens. Jermaine Allensworth hit an RBI double off Stephens to scored the unearned run and make the score 3-1. Stephens pitched one and one-thirds innings for his fourth save of the season.

The JackHammers and RailCats wrap up their three-game series tomorrow night. First pitch from Silver Cross Field is at 7:05 and the pre-game show begins at 6:50 on 1340 WJOL. The newcomer Marc Sauer gets his first start in front of the home fans. He has an 0-0 record and a 3.00 E.R.A. Plainfield resident and former JackHammer Jason Shelley starts for Gary. He is 2-2 with a 4.97 E.R.A.

Loose Gravel: Make sure to get your tickets at the ballpark for Thursday night's game. It's Jammers Birthday Party. The JackHammers will be giving out mascot bobble head dolls to the first 1,000 fans. There will also be a cupcake giveaway courtesy of Milano's Bakery.
