JackHammers walk off with win

JOLIET- The Joliet JackHammers (30-54) scored seven runs in the 9th inning to come all the way back from a 7-1 deficit and walk away with an 8-7 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (51-34) before 2,277 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. 1B Freddie Thon (2-5) had the game-winning RBI groundout in the 9th inning for Joliet.

The RailCats scored three runs in the 2nd inning against JackHammers RHP Rory Shortell. 3B Mike Rohde (1-4) tripled and scored on a single by C Anthony Esquer (3-4). RF Jordan Czarniecki (0-4) reached on a fielder's choice as Esquer was retired at second base.

CF Rob Marconi (3-4) hit a two-run home run for a 3-0 RailCats lead.

The JackHammers scored a single run in the 2nd inning to cut the Gary lead down to 3-1. Thon doubled and scored on a single by RF Tim Alberts (4-4).

Gary scored a single run in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by 1B Jeff Beachum (1-5). DH Steve Haake (2-5) got a base hit and stole second base before Beachum knocked him in. The RailCats took a 4-1 lead.

The visitors tacked on one run in the 6th inning and two runs in the 8th inning. In the 6th inning, Esquer singled and went to third base on a single by Marconi. A sacrifice fly by LF Mike Massaro (0-4) made it 5-1 Gary.

Marconi added his second two-run home run of the game in the 8th inning to make it 7-1 Gary.

The JackHammers started their comeback in the 9th inning. SS Kevin Rios (1-4) doubled and moved to third base on a groundout by Thon. Alberts singled him in to make it 7-2.

3B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-3) walked and DH Mike Garcia (1-4) ripped a two-run double to score both Alberts and Rios and make it 7-4.

C Christian Lopez (1-4) followed with a single to plate Garcia and make it 7-5. He moved to second base when LF Eric Scriven (0-3) was hit by a pitch. CF Adam Klein (1-5) doubled in Lopez to make it 7-6. An RBI single by 2B Rob Dahlberg (1-4) brought in Scriven and made it 7-7.

After Rios was hit by a pitch, Thon grounded out to SS Jay Pecci to score Klein from third base for an 8-7 win.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers recorded 7 strikeouts at the game on Wednesday, making every ticket stub at the ballpark eligible to be exchanged for a free baby blossom appetizer at the three Texas Roadhouse locations in the area: Joliet, Tinley Park and Naperville. Every time the JackHammers record seven or more strikeouts in a home game this season, fans with ticket stubs to that night's game can exchange their ticket stub for a free baby blossom appetizer

The JackHammers head to Kansas City to begin a three-game series with the T-Bones on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers send RHP Jason Novak (2-4, 6.44) to the mound against RHP Cody McAlister (6-4, 5.06) for the T-Bones.
