Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-Travis Brown's three-run triple was the exclamation point in a five-run fifth inning as the Schaumburg Flyers defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 13-3 in game one of a four-game series at Alexian Field.
Winnipeg started the scoring with the first batter of the game. Cory Patton hit a leadoff home run, his 13th of the season, to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers answered in their half of the first with some small ball. Antoan Richardson singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a grounder to the third baseman-former Flyer Vince Harrison. Harrison came home with it but Richardson slid under the tag to tie the game at one.
Richardson started the scoring again in the third. He bunted his way on and eventually advanced to third, with Victor Ferrante behind him at second. Jeff Dunbar drilled a two-RBI single, giving the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
Brent Metheny cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the fourth, his 12th of the season. But the two solo home runs were really the only blemishes on the night for Flyers starter Ed Almonte.
Schaumburg broke the game open in their half of the fifth. Felix Jose and Dunbar had back-to-back singles. After a Tony Mansolino walk, Joe Pauley recorded his first professional RBI with a walk. Brown then cleared the bases by drilling a triple to right-center. Goldeyes shortstop Adam Frost booted a Ferrante grounder to score Brown. The Flyers left the fifth with a commanding 8-2 lead.
Dee Brown doubled and scored in the seventh for the Goldeyes, but the Flyers answered right back. Pauley singled, stole second, and scored on a double by Richardson.
Schaumburg scratched across a few more in the bottom of the eighth for good measure. Lyndon Poole, who extended his hit streak to six games, scored on a wild pitch. Mansolino scored on a fielder's choice grounder. Then, with Brown on second and Richardson on first, Ferrante extended his hit streak to six games with a two-RBI double to right-center, giving the Flyers a 13-3 lead.
Almonte had all the run support he would need, pitching a gem. In seven innings, he gave up three runs while striking out a season-high eight Goldeyes in the win, improving to 6-10 on the season. Mark Michael got the start for Winnipeg, giving up eight runs, seven earned, in five innings, and he dropped to 2-5. Kris Jiggitts threw two shutout innings of relief for the Flyers, striking out two.
Richardson reached base five times, going 3-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Pauley went 2-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Brown had four RBIs and two runs scored.
The Flyers needed this win as Kansas City defeated Joliet earlier in the evening. The T-Bones still lead the Flyers by 2.5 games for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League. The Flyers are now 37-49 on the season and have evened their season record with the Goldeyes at seven wins apiece. Winnipeg has now lost five in a row and is two games out of first-the most they have been out of first all season long. Their record stands at 49-37.
Game two of the series is tomorrow night as LHP Carmen Pignatiello (6-9, 6.04) gets the nod for the Flyers to take on RHP Bear Bay (8-3, 3.38) of the Goldeyes. It will be the last fireworks night at Alexian Field, with the first pitch at 6:45.
