
JackHammers soar over Flyers

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (22-21) scored five runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to beat the Schaumburg Flyers 7-2 before 2,550 fans at ALEXIAN Field. RHP Nate Sevier (3-2) pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out six for the JackHammers, who look for the three-game sweep on Thursday night. Joliet has now won three in a row.
The JackHammers scored two runs in the third inning against Schaumburg starting pitcher Matt Varner (1-7). Dorian Rojas (3-3) led off the inning with a triple. Nick Prosise (1-4) followed with a walk and Mike Caruso (2-5) grounded out to move Prosise to second base. The JackHammers had two runners in scoring position with one out for Nick McIntyre (3-3), who singled home Rojas for a 1-0 lead.
Prosise, who went to third on the single by McIntyre, scored on a groundout by Doc Brooks (1-5) for a 2-0 Joliet advantage.
In the fourth inning, Peanut Williams (1-4) led off with a solo home run against Sevier to cut the JackHammers lead in half at 2-1.
The JackHammers scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Prosise. Joey Gomes (1-3) reached base with a one-out double and advanced to second base when Rojas reached on a walk. Prosise lined a double to center field. Gomes and Rojas scored for a 4-1 Joliet advantage.
Joliet also touched up Schaumburg reliever Chris Saenz for two runs in the seventh inning. McIntyre led off the inning with a walk. He stole second and third base and scored on a double by Cory Harris.
Freddie Thon (1-4) hit a bloop double to left field that dropped just inside the foul line in left field. Harris advanced one base on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gomes for a 6-1 lead.
The JackHmamers got another insurance run in the seventh inning when McIntyre hit an RBI single to score Rojas and make it 7-1.
Loose Gravel: Dustin Taylor pitched three innings and allowed one run on two hits to pick up his first save of the 2008 season.
The JackHammers and Flyers conclude their series on Thursday night. The JackHammers send LHP David Moraga (5-1, 4.61) to the mound against RHP Brian Finch (0-1, 4.56) for Schaumburg.
