Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - A dark and stormy night for northern Illinois escaped Schaumburg on Wednesday, which allowed the Schaumburg Flyers and Joliet JackHammers to square off at Alexian Field. Unfortunately for the home team, Joliet stormed the base paths all night long. The JackHammers scattered 15 hits against Flyers pitchers en route to a 7-2 victory.

Schaumburg (16-27) got some nice defensive plays early from C Lance Koenig (1-for-4) to keep things close. The JackHammers had two singles erased between the first and second innings on throws that caught baserunners trying to steal second base. Flyers starter Matt Varner (1-7) also had an auspicious start in the strikeout column, as he retired three Joliet (22-21) hitters on strikes through two innings.

In the top of the third, Joliet broke through. A leadoff triple by RF Dorian Rojas (3-for-3, 3 R) followed by a walk put mean on the corners with nobody out. After a groundout to Flyers 1B Chris Gaskin (0-for-4) moved a runner to second base, JackHammers SS Nick McIntyre (3-for-3, 2 RBI) singled to left field to drive in Rojas and make it 1-0. Right behind him, LF Doc Brooks (1-for-5, RBI) grounded out to drive in another man and make it 2-0.

That set the stage for Schaumburg DH Peanut Williams (1-for-4, RBI). As the leadoff hitter, he took a Nate Sevier (3-2) pitch high and deep to center field. Joliet CF Cory Harris (2-for-5, RBI) leapt at the wall and came up empty, and Peanut rounded the bases with his sixth home run of the season to cut Joliet's lead in half at 2-1.

Things stayed that way until the top of the sixth, when Joliet scored the eventual winning run. With two men on base via walks, JackHammers C Nick Prosise (1-for-4, 2 RBI) sent a double deep to left-center field that cleared the bases and made it 4-1. The visitors added two more in the top of the seventh off reliever Chris Saenz to make it 6-1 in their favor, and in the top of the eighth Rojas scored his third run of the night on McIntyre's second RBI single to make it a 7-1 lead.

By that time, Joliet had sent in reliever Dustin Taylor (SV 1) for a full inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Flyers scored their only run against the lefty on an RBI single by RF Dan Maycock (2-for-4, RBI). The tall Schaumburg outfielder singled for his other hit in the game, reached on an error, and stole a base in the contest. Another solid night came from Flyers LF Jermaine Allensworth (2-for-4), who doubled, singled, and sacrificed himself on a bunt all in his first three plate appearances. Even with those strong efforts, the Flyers dropped their fifth game in a row, leaving 10 men on base on the night.

Perhaps Schaumburg can put up some offensive firepower on Fireworks Night at Alexian Field. The Flyers starter will be RHP Brian Finch (0-1, 4.45), while LHP David Moraga (5-1, 4.61) takes the hill for the JackHammers. Celebrate Independence Day a day early at Alexian Field on Thursday with the Flyers - first pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. Of course, if you just can't make it to the ballpark, listen in for all the action on flyersbaseball.com.

The Schaumburg Flyers are a member of the Northern League, a 6-team Independent Professional Baseball League established in 1993. Opening Day is May 15th, 2008. For ticket information call (847) 891-BALL (2255) or visit www.flyersbaseball.com
