Rockford RiverHawks News Release
Josh Flores didn't come into the game until the eighth inning, but provided the necessary spark as the Joliet JackHammers (28-24) rallied past the Rockford RiverHawks (23-29) 5-4 in 11 innings Monday night at Silver Cross Field. It was the first home contest since July 4th for the JackHammers, who improved to 15-10 at home this season.
Joliet finally got to Brett Durand (4-5) in the 11th inning, scoring an unearned run for the victory. Chris Colton singled with one away and Roberto Mena moved Colton up to third with a two out base hit. Flores came up and hit a chopper up the middle that Jono Brooks cut off and threw low to first, handing the JackHammers a 5-4 win.
The JackHammers once again used the long ball, tying the game at four in the ninth on a Jon Nelson solo shot off Manny Olivares. Flores came off the bench in the eighth and homered to right field off Kyle Wright to cut the Rockford lead to 4-3.
Rockford got a strong performance by Wright, who allowed three runs on four hits over 7.1 innings to earn the no decision. The RiverHawks tried to make Wright a winner, picking up two runs in the eighth. Jake Eigsti broke a 2-2 game with a single off Rory Shortell, bouncing the starter. William Jackel came on and allowed a Jason James double to put Rockford up 4-2.
Shortell earned a no decision as well, surrendering four runs on four hits in 7.1 frames. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits in the first, but wouldn't allow another hit until the eighth. Shortell retired 13 straight hitters after walking two in the third.
Freddie Thon provided the first JackHammer homer, launching a 3-0 pitch well over the wall in right to knot the game at two apiece.
Kyle Dahman picked up the victory with two scoreless innings while Jackel bridged the gap with 1.2 innings, allowing two hits.
Durand was tagged with the loss, striking out five in 1.2 frames but surrendering three hits and the game winning run.
Colton, Mena and Kevin Rios each had two hits with Thon knocking in a game high two runs.
The JackHammers improved to 4-3 against Rockford, including a 4-1 mark at Silver Cross Field. Devin Anderson (3-1) will take the ball tomorrow opposite Mike Wood (0-3). Game time is slated for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
