
JackHammers Fall in Schaumburg 5-3 On Thursday

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Schaumburg Flyers beat the Joliet JackHammers 5-3 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg on Thursday night. The JackHammers fell to 5-14 with the loss.
Joliet scored three runs on five hits in the first inning off of the Flyers starter Rick DeHart. Mike Goss led off the game with a single and stole second base. John Lackaff followed with a groundout and then Chad Ehrnsberger singled home Goss to make the score 1-0 Joliet. Bubba Smith to push Ehrnsberger up to second base. Jayson Drobiak followed with an RBI single to score Ehrnsberger and make the score 2-0 Joliet. Smith scored on a wild pitch by DeHart for a 3-0 JackHammers lead.
Luis Villarreal took the hill for Joliet and allowed two runs in the first inning. Villarreal allowed a leadoff single to Geoff McCallum, who went to second base on a past ball and moved up to third base on a groundout by Rob Watson. Chris Weekly then hit an RBI to put Schaumburg on the board and cut the Joliet lead down to 3-1. The lead shrunk to 3-2 when Eric Cole hit a solo home run to round out the first inning scoring.
The Flyers tied the game in the third inning when Nelson Gord led off the third inning with a walk, went to second base on a groundout by Geoff McCallum and scored on a single by Rob Watson. The game was tied at 3-3.
In the sixth inning, the Schaumburg Flyers took the lead for good when Chris Weekly led off the inning with a walk. He went to second base on a balk called on Villarreal. Ben Van Iderstein's RBI single scored Weekly to give Schaumburg a 4-3 lead.
The winning run scored in the sixth inning off the JackHammers reliever Eric Fussell. Fussell relieved Villarreal, who went six innings and allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two. Fussell started off the inning by allowing a leadoff double against Nelson Gord, who stole third base and came around to score on a wild pitch by Fussell to round out the scoring at 5-3.
The JackHammers continue their series with the Schaumburg Flyers on Friday at 6:45 p.m. Pre game coverage begins at 6:30 on 1340 WJOL.
