New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The 'never say die' New Jersey Jackals get to say the best works in baseball, "Game 5." For the second time in this wild and crazy Can-Am League Championship Series, the Jackals pulled one out in the later innings, beating the Aigles 7-5 to force a winner take all finale on Sunday afternoon.
Call it Championship Sunday, Can-Am League style.
The Jackals trailed the Aigles 5-4 heading into the eighth inning, and like they had in Game 2, the Jackals found a way to prevail with their backs against the wall.
D'Vontrey Richardson, who didn't even start his season with New Jersey, as he was a member of the Laredo Lemurs, acquired by the Jackals in August for this specific playoff run, delivered the biggest hit of his season - a triple into the gap in left-center field that woke up Yogi Berra Stadium, and gave the Jackals renewed life.
In the midst of an at bat to Jared Schlehuber, Aigles starter Luis Munoz threw a wild pitch in the dirt that allowed Richardson to race home with the tying run, and just like that it was a brand new game at 5-5.
Later in the inning with two out, Peter Mooney kept the Jackals momentum alive with a base hit through the hole at second. An Anthony Gomez single would follow, and suddenly the Jackals were knocking on the door.
Now it was up to slugger A.J. Kirby-Jones to bring them home, and the slugger didn't disappoint. While he didn't rip one over the wall, or into the gap, he poked the baseball down the third line only to have third baseman Eric Grabe bobble the ball for an error. Both Mooney and Gomez scored on the play, as the ball skidded past Grabe down the third base line.
Jackals 7, Aigles 5.
Hector Nelo would work a very quick 1-2-3 ninth inning, getting Grabe, Craig Hertler and Pedro Lopez all to fly out to end the ball game.
John Walter started for New Jersey and lasted five-and-one-third innings. He held a 4-2 lead before the Aigles rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth that tied the game. Walter allowed four runs on the day on seven hits, and struck out four. He finished with a no decision; Walter received a standing ovation from the Yogi Berra Stadium crowd in his final start of the year.
The Jackals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in this game thanks to an error by Jose Cuevas that allowed Richardson to score the first run of the day back in the third inning. In the fourth inning, catcher Tim Quinn had his biggest hit of the year with a 2-run single.
The Aigles scored all five of their runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Steve Brown put the Aigles out in front on a RBI base hit to center in the seventh.
Alex Powers got the win for New Jersey, holding the Aigles to just one run on three hits over two-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
The Jackals and Aigles play a winner-take-all Game 5 on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. Pitchers on both sides are TBA. The Can-Am League Championship Game begins at 2:05 p.m. Tickets are available. The game is also available on canamleague.tv or the Jackals Radio Network via Stretch internet.
