Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals earned a split in their two-game exhibition series with the Adirondack Frostbite by scoring five times in a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon.
The Jackals, playing with more of their veteran skaters, jumped on top at the mid point of the first period. At 9:49 Eddy Lowe scored from Jason Sessa to take a 1-0 lead. But Adirondack would quickly slow the hometown momentum, striking back 1:50 later, when Frank Littlejohn exhibited some clever stick handling to elude starter Greg Hewitt and tie the game at one.
Elmira, who never trailed in this game, regained the lead for good just six minutes into the second frame. Lowe put his preseason tally up to two goals, this time scoring from Chad Moore and rookie Derek Campbell. Defenseman George Pujacs' one-timer from the slot ringed off the inside of the post on its way past Frostbite goaltender Pierre-Olivier Girouard, to give the Jackals a 3-1 lead.
In the final period, Elmira really exerted their dominance on this game. At 10:18 Greg Koehler batted his own rebound out of mid-air to beat Girouard for a power play goal to make it 4-1. Adirondack got one back 42 seconds later when Jean-Francois Labarre blasted a ricochet over the shoulder of rookie Kevin Kurk, who replaced Hewitt as schedule halfway through the game. But Elmira finished off the Frostbite at 16:19, when defenseman Vaclav Zavoral tapped in the puck to complete a 3-on-1 rush, and a 5-2 Jackals victory.
Hewitt looked sharp in his first appearance for the Jackals, stopping 14-of-15 shots in 30:14 of play to get the win. Kurk, who also played well, also stopped 14 shots. Girouard got the loss, making 25 saves on 30 Elmira shots. The Jackals open the 2004-05 regular season at home against the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday October 15th at 7:30 pm.
