Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, are pleased to announce that general manager Robbie Nichols, and his wife, Nellie, were one of three recipients of the Life Saver Award for their continued support and participation in the Chemung County Foster Parent program.
The Nichols' were honored Wednesday night at the Ninth Annual Chemung County Foster Parent Appreciation Banquet at Lib's Supper Club in Elmira. The banquet also recognized three other couples that have continually opened their homes to children in need in the Twin Tiers.
Since relocating to Elmira, in the spring of 2006, the Nichols' have welcomed over a dozen foster children into their home and currently are foster parents to four girls. While a personal undertaking, their participation in the Foster Parent Program reinforces the Jackals overall commitment to community and taking an active role in being involved in off-ice and off-season activities.
Last season, the Jackals embedded itself in the Twin Tiers community by making over one hundred public appearances in season, brightening the lives of school children, hospital patients and senior citizens. The club participated in several food drives, the annual Teddy Bear Toss that saw hundreds of stuffed toys donated to underprivileged children and facilitated Donor Awareness Night at First Arena in conjunction with a Jackals game in March.
A busy summer of community involvement begins Memorial Day this coming Monday with the Jackals appearing in three different parade celebrations in Elmira, Corning and Millerton, Pennsylvania. That will be part of what is a tentative 15-event/appearance schedule currently slated through July. The Jackals anticipate that the total will climb to between 25-30 appearances before the ice is put back down at First Arena and training camp begins in October.
Organizations are reminded that if you'd like the Jackals to have a presence at your spring/summer community event, please call the Jackals' administrative office at (607) 734-7825. Accommodations will be made as the appearance schedule allows.
