New Jersey Jackals News Release

Augusta, NJ - Right-hander Kyle Ruwe hurled 6 1/3 shutout innings and the Sussex Skyhawks scored seven runs over the game's first two frames en route to an 8-0 victory over the New Jersey Jackals on Thursday night at Skylands Park. Jackals' starter Stuart Pomeranz struggled early and never settled down, allowing six consecutive hits to start the game as the Skyhawks plated four runs in the bottom of first inning. In the second, Sussex tacked on three more runs to chase the New Jersey right-hander from the game after just 1 1/3 innings. In total, Pomeranz (3-3) allowed seven runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and no walks as he took the loss in his worst outing of the season. New Jersey reliever Kevin Gunter entered for Pomeranz with one out in the second and proceeded to hurl 3 2/3 scoreless innings as he notched four strikeouts while surrendering just one hit. In the first, an RBI double by designated hitter Jorge Moreno plated second baseman Chris Brown with the game's first run before a Maikel Jova RBI single made it 2-0. First baseman John Urick followed with a two-run double to right center to extend the Skyhawks lead to 4-0. In the second inning, RBI singles by Brown, Moreno, and third baseman Jeremy Hunt made it a 7-0 Sussex advantage. That score held until the top of the seventh inning when the skies opened up, forcing a 1 hour, 22 minute rain delay. Once play resumed, the Skyhawks added the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Jackals' reliever Mark Suchowiecki when Moreno led off with a single and scored on a fielders' choice off that bad of third baseman Jeremy Hunt.

Ruwe (4-2) earned the win after scattering eight hits, walking one batter, and striking out four. Offensively for New Jersey, center fielder Billy Kovatch went 3-for-4 with three singles while right fielder Myron Leslie picked up a pair of singles in three at-bats. For the Skyhawks, Brown and Moreno led the offensive charge with three hits each. Suchowiecki pitched well out of the New Jersey bullpen, surrendering one run on four hits in three innings. In the loss, New Jersey stranded 10 runners on base.

With the loss, the Jackals fall to 22-11 while the Skyhawks improve to 15-18 with the win. Despite the loss, New Jersey's magic number to clinch the first half is nine with 14 games remaining. The Jackals travel to Massachusetts to begin a three-game weekend set against the Worcester Tornadoes on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. New Jersey sends rookie left-hander Giuseppe Granitto (0-1, 5.09 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. Cody Chrusciel has the call with the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
