New Jersey Jackals News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NJ - With spring training set to take place in seven weeks, the New Jersey Jackals added two more players to their roster today. The Jackals acquired right-handed pitcher Joe Magri from the Bangor Lumberjacks for future considerations and signed rookie free agent catcher Peter L'Italien.

The 23 year-old Magri will be entering his second season in professional baseball in 2003. Last season for the Lumberjacks he posted a 2-1 record and a 3.28 ERA in 17 games (7 starts) as a rookie. Magri allowed only 48 hits in 49.1 innings pitched.

It was almost predestined that Magri would one day pitch for the Jackals. He played his college ball at Pace University, where former Jackals assistant general manager Hank Manning was his head coach, and he broke into the pros under the guidance of former Jackals manager Kash Beauchamp, who now pilots the Lumberjacks.

"I've heard great things about Magri," said Jackals manager Joe Calfapietra. "His numbers as a rookie last season were very impressive."

L'Italien was signed by the Jackals after being selected by New Jersey in last week's Northeast League tryout camp. He will vie for the backup catcher's position behind incumbent starter Mikaela Dworken.

"Peter was the best player available when it was our turn to pick in the draft," said Calfapietra. "He's going to come into spring training and battle Jason Valloni for the backup catcher's spot. I'm excited to see how he handles the competition."

The Jackals begin their sixth season on May 22nd with a home game against the Berkshire Black Bears at Yogi Berra Stadium. For ticket information, fans can log on to www.jackals.com or call (973) 746-7434.
