Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - It was a split weekend for the Odessa Jackalopes (3-1-0) who sit in first place of the CHL's Southwest Division after completing the second weekend of play in the 2008-2009 regular season.
Weekend Record, 1-1-0
Up Next: Tuesday @ AMA, Friday vs. RGV, Saturday vs. ARZ
At New Mexico, 9-2 Win
The Jackalopes pulled away early scoring four goals in the first 6:30 of the games. Juha Toivonen stopped 42 of 44 shots by the Scorpions to preserve his third win on the season. Seven different players scored goals for Odessa, and the team set a new season high with nine goals in a single game.
At Texas, 7-3 Loss
It was a slow start offensively for Odessa who managed just five shots and were held scoreless in the first period. The Jacks gave up three power play goals in the second period, but managed to score two goals of their own from Sebastien Thinel and Kory Karlander. In the third period, Dominic Leveille added his third goal of the season, but the Jacks defense couldn't hold back the Brahmas who added three more goals of their own.
Tuesday @ Amarillo, 11:00 AM
The Amarillo Gorillas are currently 0-4-0 on the season and sit dead last in the Southwest Division. Tuesday will be the first of nine games between Odessa and Amarillo this season. Last year the Jackalopes held a 10-2-0 record vs. the Gorillas. Sebastien Thinel and Dominic Leveille combined for 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in those 12 games.
Friday vs. Rio Grande Valley, 7:05 PM
It will be the home opener for Odessa as former Jackalopes goalie, Mike Gorman, makes his return to the JackShack after signing with the Killer Bees in the offseason. Last year the Bees and Jacks met three times with Odessa winning two of those games (2-1-0).
Saturday vs. Arizona, 7:05 PM
The Jackalopes swept a weekend set at Arizona on the CHL's opening weekend, 7-2 and 3-1. Arizona enters the JackShack for the first of three trips to Odessa this year. The Sundogs are led by forwards Joel Irving and Martin Gascon (six points each) offensively.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team is in its 12th season and will play its home opener on Halloween night against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 7:05 PM.
