Jackalopes Fall 6-3 to IceRays

Odessa Jackalopes News Release

ODESSA, TX - It was a night that started much like Friday night, the Jackalopes (7-10-1-1) got out to an early lead. However, the Corpus Christi IceRays (10-8-2-3) were the ones opening the offense in the third period and taking the victory 6-3 at the Ector County Coliseum on Saturday night.

The Jacks got on the board first just one minute and 14 seconds into the game as Matt Hutton capitalized on an odd-man rush to put the Jackalopes up 1-0. Odessa added another one later in the period thanks to newcomer Sam Harris who capitalized on another odd-man rush. Harris, a former Maine Nordique, was able to pick up his fourth goal of the season and his first as a Jackalope.

With the Jackalopes up 2-0, the IceRays tied the game late in the first period and the Jackalopes took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after the first period.

In the second period, the Rays tied the game up on a tipped shot but the Jackalopes responded just 57 seconds later. Matt Clark took a shot from the point that sailed up and over the shoulder of Corpus Christi netminder Cal Sandquist to regain the Jackalopes the lead 3-2. It was the first goal of the year for Clark.

However, a few minutes later the IceRays tied the game up again for the second time and forced the Jackalopes to recoil a bit. But Odessa showed great resolve in handling adversity, especially in the later part of the second period in killing off a five-minute major penalty.

With the game tied in the third period, the Jackalopes looked to be in a position to do what they did on Friday, score three goals and put the game out of reach. However it was Corpus Christi who scored the three goals (the last on an empty-net) to secure a 6-3 victory and at least two points from the weekend.

Despite the loss, the Jackalopes offense has now scored three goals or more in back-to-back games and the newcomers for Odessa have been making an impact offensively be it on the scoresheet or otherwise. Time will tell it the Jackalopes may be starting to turn a corner with their offensive production.

The Jacks will look to take the weekend series tomorrow afternoon against the Rays at 5:00 at the Ector County Coliseum.
