Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. June 3, 2011 - Newark's own Burt Reynolds delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Newark Bears an 8-7 over the New York Federals Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Reynolds, the first Newark native to ever play for the Bears and a graduate of Bloomfield Tech, had three hits for the Bears, keying Newark's 14-hit attack.
After New York tied the game with a run in the top of the inning, the Bears rallied in the home ninth. Tim Raines, Jr. was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Jeff Toth. Daryle Ward was walked intentionally and Kyle LaMotta went in to pinch-run for Raines. After Danny Santiesteban flew out to right, with LaMotta crossing over to third on the play, Reynolds lined a hard single to right off losing pitcher Nick Renault (0-1) with two strikes for the game-winning hit.
The Bears (4-4) won for the second straight game, while the Federals fell to 1-7 on the season.
Brandon Watson had two hits, two stolen bases and three RBI for the Bears. Santiesteban and Ward had two hits each. Mikey Mehlich (1-0) earned the victory in relief of starter Ryan Lobban.
The Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Ward led off with a triple to deep center field and scored on RBI single from Santiesteban. One out later, Todd Gossage delivered a run-scoring single, scoring Santiesteban.
The Bears added another run in the third inning, when Watson walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Raines, Jr.'s sacrifice fly, his league-leading 11th RBI of the season.
The Federals then tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three times. Andrew Barbaro started the rally with a single and scored on a double from Tom Maloney. Jacob Fabry followed with an RBI triple and Stephen Pinto added a sacrifice fly to even the score at 3-3.
But the Bears countered with a four-run home fourth inning to take command of the game and chasing starter and loser Giuseppe Granitto (0-2) . With one out, Burt Reynolds singled, followed by consecutive singles from Gossage and Billy Alvino, who entered the game as the Can-Am League's No. 2 hitter with a .478 average, smacked an RBI single to left that scored Reynolds with the go-ahead run.
After Paddy Matera walked, Watson hit a sinking line drive to centerfield that rolled all the way to the wall for a three-run triple, pushing the lead to 7-3.
From that point, Lobban settled down and retired seven of the last eight batters he faced. Lobban scattered six hits, allowing three earned runs, walking two and striking out four. Kyle Morrison, signed earlier in the day, pitched two innings in his debut and allowed three runs. Brad Jackson and Fabry delivered consecutive RBI doubles and a wild pitch cut the lead to 7-6.
The Federals tied the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Andrew Barbaro off Bears closer Mehlich.
The Bears and Federals continue their five-game series Saturday night at "The Den" with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Eric Eden, a native of Hillsborough, will get the start for the Bears. The Bears will face the Federals also on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, before welcoming the neighboring rival New Jersey Jackals for two games on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
