Islanders Fall to Richmond 0-3, Face Toronto Sunday
July 8, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Lancaster, PA - City Islanders FC suffered their first loss in Lancaster after they fell 3-0 to the Richmond Kickers Friday night in Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Before Friday's game City had won all three of their previous matches in Lancaster County, which most recently featured a two-game winning streak a few weeks ago this season. City was unable to overcome the pair of early goals in the first 30 minutes of play.
City has failed to pick up a win in seven USL games and find themselves towards the bottom of the table. Richmond held its spot as the last team in the playoffs as of now. City will have a quick turnaround when they welcome in Toronto FC to Lancaster on Sunday.
Both teams started the game with chance on both goals. City's best chance in the opening minutes came from a Jose Barril free kick that just skimmed over the bar.
Richmond was able to find the quality to get the opening goal off of the first corner kick of the game. Richard Paulini got on the end of a low hard cross into the box to beat Nick Noble on the far side of the goal. Noble has good placement, but they shot by Paulini had even better placement.
Paulini made his mark on the game again by putting in a perfect through ball to Sunny Jane, who did the rest of the work by side stepping a few Islanders defense and slipping it by Noble for the second tally of the game.
After falling behind by a pair of goals City started to pressure the Richmond defense with a few quality scoring chances. Garret Pettis slide his way behind the Kickers defense and just punched a shot wide of the net. City went into the first half still down by two despite the late half push.
City continued their offensive pressure into the second half with a couple quick chances in the opening minutes. Following a series of precise passing Barril laid a perfect pass at the dangerous feet of Paul Wilson. Wilson took the hard shot but miss the net just wide.
Richmond's defense was bending, but it never broke. Just when it looked like City was poised to score with a series of close calls, Richmond made a heavy push up the field. A bad clearance landed at the foot of a Richmond forward who fired the third and final goal into the net.
City has missed some chances to grab important points in their last few games. Both Pittsburgh and Richmond were towards the bottom half of the tables and their next opponent is just a few points of head of them. The Islanders will get a chance to earn points this Sunday against Toronto who comes in off of a win against Bethlehem and will look to make their late season playoff push.
