QMJHL Charlottetown Islanders

Islanders and Eagles Renew Hostilities in Second Half of Back-To-Back

November 14, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

No, it's not deja vu. The Charlottetown Islanders and Cape Breton Eagles are on the schedule once again for tonight.

Coming off a dominant 7-2 victory by the Islanders over the Eagles just last night, the two teams will meet in the second half of back-to-back games tonight at the Eastlink Centre at 7:00pm

The Islanders (10-2-0-0) turned in a more effective, more complete performance than what they did last weekend, thwarting the Eagles offense at every facet of the game while also capitalizing on their own. The team was led by a pair of young defensemen, Lukas Cormier and William Trudeau. The pair each recorded two goals in the game; Cormier, for his part, is now tied with teammate Thomas Casey for fifth overall in the QMJHL points race with 19 points in 12 games.

Islanders head coach Jim Hulton said following the game that having a pair of high-end defenders like Cormier and Trudeau on his back-end, two that play on opposite defense pairings, gives his team a dynamic that many teams don't have.

"It makes us awfully hard to defend," he explained. "It's a luxury that a lot of teams don't have."

Meanwhile in the Cape Breton locker room, the Eagles (6-7-0-0) will try to get back on the winning side of things by spreading out their offense. So far this season the goals have flowed through their top line of Shawn Element, Felix Lafrance, Ryan Francis, Nathan Larose, and Jarrett Baker. Last night the Islanders shut that unit down, forcing Cape Breton to rely on their secondary scoring.

One player to keep an eye on is 19 year-old Liam Kidney. The Enfield, Nova Scotia native has quietly put together a solid season playing on the second line with 17-year-old Connor Trenholm and Emile Hegarty-Aubin, recording nine points in 13 games already this season. Kidney picked up a helper last night on Jeremy Langlois' first period goal, giving him points in back-to-back games.
