International League Names Player of the Month
Published on July 1, 2014 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre second baseman- outfielder Jose Pirela has been named the LeagueÃ's Player of the Month for June. Along with winners from other leagues, Pirela will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of his performance last month.
Jose Pirela led the International League with 40 hits in the month of June, three more than the next closest competitor. For the past month, Pirela hit .336 with 10 extra-base hits, five stolen bases, 18 RBI and 21 runs scored. SWBÃ's leadoff man was also the teamÃ's most versatile defender, seeing action at first base, second base, left field, and right field over the past month. Pirela was named the IL Player of the Week for the final week of May, the beginning of a hot streak he carried right into June. With a franchise record-tying five-hit performance on June 1, Pirela started a six-game hitting streak that included a two-hit game and three consecutive three-hit games. It was the first of two six-game hitting streaks during June, and by monthÃ's end Pirela had reached base safely in all but two contests. For the season, Pirela is 2nd in the IL in both hits (96) and runs scored (53).
24-year-old Jose Pirela was signed by the Yankees as an international free agent prior to the 2007 season. He first reached Triple-A in 2013, hitting .304 in a five-game stint with the RailRiders. He has yet to make his Major League debut. Pirela is a native of Valera, Venezuela.
