
Inter Miami CF Signs Legendary Midfielder Sergio Busquets

Inter Miami CF announced today that it has signed legendary Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets to a contract running through the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The one-time World Cup champion, nine-time LaLiga winner and former FC Barcelona captain, considered to be one of the greatest midfielders of all time, will occupy a Designated Player slot, is expected to join the team in the coming days.

Busquets' sterling résumé features several major team accomplishments, including helping lead Spain to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2012 UEFA Euro titles. At the club level, he has won LaLiga nine times, most recently winning the 2022-23 campaign, FIFA Club World Cup three times, UEFA Champions League three times and Copa del Rey seven times.
The holding midfielder has also earned a number of individual honors throughout his career. Notably, Busquets was named to the LaLiga team of the season and UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season once each, and the UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament once. He was also named LaLiga's Breakthrough Player in 2009 and the UEFA Nations League Player of the Tournament in 2021.
Prior to joining Inter Miami, Busquets spent his entire professional career at FC Barcelona, coming through the renowned academy La Masia and becoming a legend of the club. The Sabadell, Spain native made 721 appearances for Barcelona over the course of 15 seasons, the third most of any player in the club's history. In that time, he scored 19 goals and registered 40 assists. Notably, Busquets was managed by Inter Miami CF head coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino in the 2013-14 campaign, winning the 2013 Supercopa de España together.
Busquets also put together a historic national team career with Spain, helping guide the country to its most successful era. He started every match of the team's 2010 FIFA World Cup title run and played every minute of its 2012 UEFA Euro winning campaign. In total, he made 143 appearances for Spain, the third most of any player in the country's history.
Busquets will first be available for selection for Inter Miami CF when they take on LIGA MX side, Cruz Azul in the July 21 opening match of Leagues Cup, a new North American soccer tournament in which MLS and LIGA MX will pause their respective league seasons from July 21 to August 19 to determine the three clubs that will qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. All 47 first division clubs in Canada, Mexico and the US will compete in the World Cup-style, official Concacaf tournament. A limited number of tickets are still available for the match on July 21 and can be purchased here.
