Indians Outlast Bears in Marathon 16-Inning Game
The Yakima Bears lost the 2011 home opener 9-5 to the Spokane Indians after 16 innings of baseball at Yakima County Stadium Wednesday night. The Bears have now lost four straight, while the Indians have a five-game winnings streak.
The Bears scored first after Marc Bourgeois led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Jimmy Comerota. That pair would be busy at the plate all night. With the Bears trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Bourgeois doubled to advance Garrett Weber to third and Comerota plated Weber with another groundout.
With the Bears down 5-3, Yakima's starting pitcher Brad Wilson would finally leave the game after six and a third innings. Wilson managed a quality start in the game, as only two of the five runs scored while he was pitching were earned runs.
The Bears tied the game with a pair of runs in the eighth inning, as the top six batters in order all managed to reach, including Comerota, who drove in his third run of the game.
With Wilson out, the Bears bullpen combined for 10 scoreless innings between Miles Reagan, Evan Marshall, Alex Capaul, Kable Hogben, and Mike Blake. Blake tossed a scoreless 14th and 15th before giving up a two-run home run with one out in the 16th. The other two runs were charged to Jimmy Comerota, who came on to pitch from first base. Blake dropped to 0-2, while Juan Grullon picked up his Northwest League leading third win for the Indians.
The Bears were outhit 17-12 in the loss where many opportunities in extra innings only required one more hit. The Bears stranded runners in scoring position in the 14th and 15th innings, in addition to the runner thrown out at home in the 12th inning.
The Bears and Indians play game two of the three-game series Thursday at 7:05 inside Yakima County Stadium.
