Salem RidgeYaks News Release
A rough and tumble month of August reached a new nadir on Sunday afternoon, as Kinston scored a dozen times in the fifth inning to launch the Indians to a 15-2 rout of the Red Sox in the series finale at Grainger Stadium. The ugly setback, Salem's 14th loss in its last 19 games, dropped the Sox to three games behind the Indians in the second-half playoff chase. Following an off-day on Monday, the Sox will be back at Lewis-Gale Field for a 10-game in seven-day homestand to wrap up the 2010 regular season.
The Indians' largest inning of the year broke open a tight 3-1 game, as 15 Indians batted, connecting for 12 runs on eight hits and four walks against two Salem relievers. Cesar Cabral entered as the inning commenced and immediately surrendered a double to Bo Greenwell. A bunt single for Karexon Sanchez moved Greenwell to third, and Jeremie Tice walked to load the bases, setting the table for the massacre. Cabral ended up facing nine batters and only retired one, giving up eight runs on five hits and three walks. Donnie Webb and Ronald Rivas each drove in two for the K-Tribe before Cabral was finally chased.
With the score 9-1, Kyle Fernandes entered with two on and one out. Greenwell greeted Fernandes with his second hit of inning, and following a walk, a fielder's choice, and another double, Kyle Bellows' three-run jack served as the exclamation point that made it 15-1. Fernandes allowed both inherited runners to score and was charged with four runs himself before he finally struck out Doug Pickens to quell the carnage.
Chun Chen joined Greenwell with two hits in the fifth inning, and Chen also belted a two-run bomb earlier in the game to finish 3-5 with three RBI. Bellows led the Tribe with four runs driven in, highlighted by his three run dinger, his ninth homer of the season.
Though none of the fifth inning was the responsibility of Caleb Clay, the Sox starter lost his 12th game of the season, falling to 4-12 after giving up three runs on three hits and two walks in four innings. Will Latimer and Pat Ryan tossed the final three innings without allowing a run after the K-Tribe had the game well in hand.
Salem's lone runs came in the second and eighth innings. Ronald Bermudez' RBI single plated Jon Hee in the second, and Oscar Tejeda's ground-out scored Mitch Dening in the eighth. Bermudez and Alex Hassan each finished 2-4 as the only Sox with multiple hits.
Kinston righthander Austin Adams improved to 5-1 on the year with five innings, yielding just one unearned run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. A trio of Indians relievers kept the Sox at bay the rest of the way.
Though Salem is three games back of Kinston, the Sox only trail the Tribe by one in the loss column. Kinston heads on the road for eight games in seven days, while Salem has ten in seven days, all at home. The final stretch kicks off on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Potomac, beginning at 5:30 at Lewis-Gale Field. In game one, Michael Lee will take on Jimmy Barthmaier, while Mark Holliman will oppose Pat Lehman in game two.
