Indianapolis shuts down RiverKings

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss – The two-time defending CHL Champion Memphis RiverKings found themselves on the losing end of a goaltending duel, falling 1-0 to the visiting Indianapolis Ice in front of 3,002 patrons at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Ice defenseman Bernie John's first period power play goal, his 14th of the season, proved the difference maker and the only goal Indianapolis would need. John's strike was the result of a nicely timed pass courtesy of forwards Jason Baird and Dave Gilmore, who received assists on the play.

A flurry of chances for the Ice during the second period threatened to extend the lead, but Riverkings goaltender Jean-Francois Racine registered 12 of his 20 saves to keep the game close.

Racine's counterpart was one better, however, as Ice goaltender Jeff Sanger stifled a Memphis attack that had rung up an impressive 7 goals over the past 2 games. Behind the stingy Indianapolis defense, Sanger turned aside 22 shots en route to his 16th victory and 5th shutout of the season.

Racine stopped 20 of 21 shots on the contest, his fifth loss of the campaign.

Indianapolis' win crowds an already tight Northern Conference playoff scramble, as the Ice ran their record to 27-19-2 and pulled within 3 points of the ‘Kings heading into tomorrow night's rematch in Indianapolis.

Memphis, on the other hand, lost valuable ground and fell to 28-20-3, though the ‘Kings maintain their hold over the first of two wild card spots in the conference.

Both teams will have to reload and hit the ice against each other tomorrow as they complete the home-and-home series in the Pepsi Coliseum at 7:05 CST.
