Indiana Ice News Release
They could have mailed this one in---and they did not. The Indiana Ice, eliminated from post-season contention and skating against the Waterloo Black Hawks in their second to last game of the season, pushed Waterloo into overtime and an eventual seven-round shootout.
The Black Hawks won their seventh straight by scoring three times in the shootout besting Indy 3-2.
Only Patrick Newell and Mikhail Plotnikov were able to score in the one-on-one against the opposing goaltender.
After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth minute of the second period, Indiana drew even at 2-all heading to the third period. The Ice converted on two consecutive power play opportunities to cancel out a two-goal deficit.
Defenseman Vince Pedrie found net from the blue line at 6:23 of the middle frame to cut the visitor lead in half with an extra skater. Jake Cass and Tyler Pham earned assists in the scoring sequence.
"We went into the second period with the mindset of putting the puck on their net and keeping the play in their zone," commented Pedrie. "We were playing to win and nothing but earning two points was acceptable."
Plotnikov notched his 20th goal of the season while Indy was skating with their next man advantage. His score was set up by a feed from Mitch Hults from the faceoff circle with just over seven minutes remaining in the second stanza. Hults picked up the puck from Patrick Newell's face off win and fed the Russian forward stationed at the Black Hawk net.
The visitor's Taylor Cammarata scored the lone Waterloo goal of the second period at 5:25.
Indiana had a distinct edge everywhere but on the scoreboard after the first period. The hosts limited the Black Hawks to three shots on goal while launching eight shots on visitor goalie Cal Petersen.
By virtue of Waterloo's Mike Huntebrinker scoring 1:50 after opening faceoff, the game's first shot of the contest put the visitors up 1-0 at the first intermission.
Anderson Snair played well enough to earn a win in net for the hosts. The Indiana netminder stopped 27 shots in regulation and overtime.
The season concluded Sunday at 3:05 when the two teams face a rematch at Banks Life Fieldhouse.
