In the Stretch; On the Road

February 28, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

We're 27-5 now, and despite last week's loss at Buffalo, still No. 1 in the ABA's power rankings. We conclude our regular-season home schedule tomorrow night against the Montreal Royal. Tip-off at Memorial Auditorium is set for 7:05, and as part of Red Cross Night, the Frost Heaves will welcome Erin Harvey as the Northfield Savings Bank 110% Community All-Star. Erin, a UVM sophomore, is one of scores of volunteers who make the Northern Vermont Chapter go. She'll be on our bench, in uniform and eligible to play-and will shoot shots at halftime to benefit the Red Cross.

After Erin's shots, 106.7 WIZN Radio and Baker Distributing will co-sponsor one more shot-the Half-Court Heave, as Jared Kross of Burlington gets a chance to win $10,000.

Following the game, members of the confirmation class of the Middlebury United Methodist Church will collect for Nothing But Nets. Every $10 donated to Nothing But Nets purchases an anti-malaria bed net for a family of four for four years. Malaria kills more than a million people each year, 90 percent of them African children. Nothing But Nets was inspired by my Sports Illustrated colleague Rick Reilly, and is supported by scores of people and organizations around the world, including the United Nations Foundation, NBA Cares, Sports Illustrated and the American Red Cross, among many, many others. Please join us in joining them. Malaria kills. Send a net. Save a life.

Tickets for Red Cross Night are available through the Flynn Regional Box Office at 153 Main Street in Burlington; 159 Pearl Street in Essex; by calling 802-86-FLYNN; or by going to www.flynntix.org. Or you can try your luck at the door.

We'll have an announcement about the ABA playoffs in the next few days, including the date and place of our first home playoff game. In the meantime, if you can't abide waiting until mid-March to see the team play again, we've got good news. Milne Travel has put together a Frost Heaves' fan bus for our Canadian road trip over the weekend of March 10 and 11. You can cheer us on as we close out the regular season with back-to-back games against Montreal and Quebec City. The package includes round-trip, deluxe motor coach transport; tickets to games against the Royal and Kebekwa; a night at the Quebec Hilton; and sightseeing tours of both world-class cities.
