Improbable Rally Lifts Steamers over Wilson

It was borderline impossible. Heading into the top of the ninth inning on the road against the hottest team in the second half, the Steamers were trailing 5-0. Against all odds, the Clams came back and rallied for six runs to win 6-5 against the Wilson Tobs at Fleming Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Tobs held a 12-4 record coming into the contest and they dominated Edenton's lineup all night long. But, a glimmer of hope opened up when Ben Whetstone led off the final frame with a double.
Following his at-bat, Rich Ciufo cranked his 14th two-bagger of the season, and all of a sudden, the Clams were on the scoreboard.
The next hitter was Anthony Warneke. He chopped a slow bouncer to first base and somehow was able to leg out a single despite Ben Faso standing only a few feet away from stepping on the bag. Runners were then on the corners for Tyler Jones.
Jones continued the trend with a RBI base hit, and the Tobs started getting nervous.
With two runners aboard, TJ Wegmann dug in from the left side of the plate. Showing no sign of feeling the pressure, he smoked a two-run double to right center field, and the Steamers were down 5-4 with nobody out. Edenton's dugout erupted.
Bryson Worrell knocked the game-tying base hit to left field and later scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
The Steamers did all this against Jared Gallagher and Ryan Troutman, two of the top Tobs relievers.
Tyler Grauer started for Wilson, a pitcher who has dominated the Steamers all year. Coming in with two starts versus the Clams with 17 strikeouts in 10 innings, Grauer fanned 10 more on Tuesday in five shutout frames. He was pulled before tossing 60 pitches.
Tripper Ergle, Cody Smith and Danny Cody each fired one scoreless inning before handing the ball to Gallagher.
Ben Anderson dazzled once more on the mound as Edenton's starter. He went seven innings, handing three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks. Anderson struck out six Tobs.
Zach Stromberg got the win, throwing for one inning. RD Lutze scooped his second save of the summer.
Zane Harris pushed his hitting streak to 15 games, going 2-for-4 at the dish.
Devon Gardner's hitting streak is now at 10 contests.
Edenton now sits at 7-10 in the second half in the North division.
The Steamers return to action on Wednesday night against the Peninsula Pilots on the road set for 7 p.m.
