IHL Awards Monthly Honors For March

ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Wednesday that Port Huron center Bryan Smolinski has been named the Pepsi IHL Player of the Month, Kalamazoo center Tommy Lange has been named the Aquafina IHL Rookie of the Month and Fort Wayne goaltender Nick Boucher has been named the Southern Sports Supply IHL Goaltender of the Month for March.

Smolinski finished his first full month in the IHL posting 21 points in 13 games played by the Icehawks. He scored five goals and dished out 16 assists, having a plus/minus rating of plus-4. The NHL veteran notched in points in all but two games, registering seven multi-point games including a four-point night on March 15th vs. Muskegon. The 37-year-old native of Toledo, Ohio had his eight-game point streak snapped on March 31st after recording three goals and 12 assists during the streak. Smolinski was held scoreless his first three games since joining the Icehawks on February 24th, but has turned up the heat scoring all his points in the month of March.

Other players nominated for the Pepsi IHL Player of the Month include: Bloomington forward Jon Booras, Flint center Greg Bullock, Fort Wayne left wing P.C. Drouin, Kalamazoo right wing Justin Cross and Muskegon left wing Luke Stauffacher.

Lange kicked off his last full month of the regular season scoring a total of 12 points in 14 games. He registered nine goals and three assists with four of his nine goals coming on the K-Wings man advantage. He went on a league-high tying six-game goal scoring streak from March 13th thru March 22nd, notching in seven goals during the streak. The 21-year-old St. Louis, Missouri native is currently tied with teammate Rick Cleaver for first among IHL rookies in goals scored with 25. Lange also leads the rookies in shots on goal with 246 shots and ranks third among rookies with 46 points.

Other players nominated for the Aquafina IHL Rookie of the Month include: Bloomington forward Bill Bagron, Flint center Maxime Lincourt, Fort Wayne center Rick Varone, Muskegon defenseman/forward Adam Bartholomay and Port Huron goaltender Ryan Mior.

Boucher wrapped up the month of March with a stellar 11-1-0-1 record. He earned two shut outs, stopping all 23 shots he faced in Bloomington on March 21st then stopped 30 shots vs. Flint on March 27th. He stopped a total of 378 shots for the month, giving him a .955 save percentage. Boucher finished the month with an 11-game unbeaten streak and a six-game winning streak after registering his first shootout win of the season Sunday, March 29th in Flint. He gave up only 18 goals against for a 1.44 goals against average. The 28-year-old Cobble Hill, British Columbia native starts the month of April leading all IHL goaltenders in goals against average (2.40) and save percentage (.921) in 49 appearances. Boucher earns his first monthly honor this season and is the third different Komet goaltender to win the monthly award.
