MILWAUKEE, WI (March 4, 2007) - Detroit Ignition goalkeeper Sanaldo, who has frustrated the Milwaukee Wave this season with his work in the nets, bedeviled them Sunday with a pair of assists as the first-place Ignition beat the Wave 13-8 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Milwaukee (11-13) lost its fifth consecutive game and fell to fifth place in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The Wave have just six games left to get back into the four-team MISL playoffs. Detroit is 15-9.

The Wave nearly rallied from a 10-6 deficit in the last 1:30. On a power play and with the sixth attacker on, Anthony Maher scored at the 1:29 mark. Milwaukee quickly put the sixth attacker back on and peppered the Ignition net. Marcelo Fontana fired a shot with Sanaldo completely out of the cage, but defender Matt Johnson was able to clear the ball off the line. After two or three other near-misses, MISL leading scorer Jamar Beasley potted an empty-netter for the final margin before 4,616 fans.

Sanaldo - who held the Wave to a season-low six points on Jan. 12 - also made a huge save with just under 4 minutes remaining, robbing Fontana from inside the penalty area on a shorthanded opportunity with the Wave trailing 10-6.

A key sequence took place early in the fourth quarter. Marcio Leite and Greg Howes hooked up on a You Tube-worthy goal with 11:01 to go. Leite, a rookie from Brazil, carried the ball diagonally across the field, dodged a defender and fired a hard pass across to the back post. Howes, the league's second-leading scorer, chested the ball directly into the goal.

But it took only 35 seconds for former Wave player Hewerton to return the margin to four. Sanaldo fired a long throw down the center of the field, where Hewerton split two defenders. His first shot was just wide, but rebounded back to him. Keeper Nick Vorberg had come out to challenge the first shot and had no chance at the second.

Milwaukee's power-play work, a sore spot during the losing streak, was excellent Sunday. They were 5-for-5 in halting the league's No. 1 power play scoring team. Lovelace Ackah led a spirited defense of the third, making two saves and playing to the crowd after he stepped in for keeper Nick Vorberg, who was called for handball outside of the penalty area. Detroit led the league entering the game, having converted on 24 of 43 power plays (55.8 percent).

Howes led the Wave with a goal and two assists; he has 77 points. Beasley also scored a 2-point goal and is up to 89 points. Todd Dusosky, who entered the game with 72 points for the Wave, was a late scratch for the contest with a leg injury.

The Wave's next game is at 1 p.m. next Sunday against the Philadelphia KiXX. Philadelphia has won three of the teams' four meetings this season. A highlight of Sunday's game for fans will be the annual Mascot Game at halftime. Come out to cheer on Brad Beach, Din-O-Mite and the other visiting mascots as the bump and bounce around the carpet at U.S. Cellular Arena.
