IFL Implementing Rule Changes for 2023

Published on February 13, 2023 under Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

Following the 2023 League meetings, the IFL has made multiple rule changes and clarifications that will go into effect for the 2023 season. The most noticeable changes are as follows:

The Deuce rule will now be in effect during the entire game. A Deuce is defined as: If a free kick (kickoff) passes through the uprights, a two (2) point "Deuce" is scored, and the ball will be spotted at the 5-yard line as the touchback spot. In prior seasons the Deuce was only available in the final 60 seconds of the half or game. Starting in 2023, it will be available throughout the entire game.

As an add-on to the extension of the Deuce rule, the ball is considered LIVE if the kickoff hits the uprights or goalposts and comes back into the field of play. Either side can advance the ball. If receiving team recovers in the endzone, rouge is in effect. If ball goes out of play, regular out of play rules in effect.

As soon as the previous play is completed and the ball is spotted, the 25 second play clock will begin.

Positive yardage rule in the last 60 seconds of the game has been eliminated. In essence, this now allows for downing the ball or "victory formation".

"We continue to look for ways to add fan engagement and excitement to our game while maintaining a fast pace of action," said IFL Commissioner Todd Tryon. "Some of our latest changes will do just that."

The 15th season of the Indoor football League kicks off on March 17th. Follow the IFL on all social media platforms and stay up to date as the season draws near.
