IceRays Top Killer Bees 3-2 to Close Preseason

October 11, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

The Corpus Christi IceRays won their second game in as many nights over a regional rival to cap a short preseason, exhibition game schedule. Three different players tallied as the IceRays beat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-2 Sunday night at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, TX. Corpus Christi concluded their pre-season 2-0 and will now look ahead to Friday night's season opening game, and Saturday night's Caller-Times Best of the Best Home Opener at 7:05pm at the American Bank Center. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets or the American Bank Center Box Office. For more information, please call the IceRays at 361.814.PUCK.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the IceRays used the scored period to find all of the offense they would need in the game. Just 90 seconds into the period, Stefan Lachapelle tied the game 1-1 getting the IceRays on the board. Corpus Christi then took their first lead of the night on a power play at 6:12 when defenseman Steven Later scored from the left circle. Later's goal - combined with Rob Jarvis' hat trick on Saturday night - gave the IceRays four of their eight preseason goals from defenseman. The Killer Bees answered to tie the score at 2-2 later in the frame, but the IceRays would answer. With time winding down in the period, Ryan Garbutt converted a turnover into a breakaway goal at 18:34 to reclaim the lead for Corpus Christi. Neither team found the back of the net in the third period, and the IceRays held on for the 3-2 victory.

The IceRays went 1-7 on the power play, and held the Bees scoreless on four chances of their own. Corpus Christi outshot RGV 37-36. IceRays goaltender Kris Tebbs made his preseason debut with a solid outing in net, playing the entire game and stopping 34 of 36 shots for the win.

The IceRays regular season begins on Friday night in Odessa, and the club returns for the Caller-Times Best of the Best Home Opener on Saturday night, 7:05pm at the American Bank Center. Great ticket specials are available for children and adults, and the first 1,000 fans will receive complimentary IceRays magnet schedules courtesy of Janet's Cakery. It's also the first installment of the Fine Jewelry Outlet Great Diamond Giveaway. Make sure you're there for the first home game of the regular season as the IceRays host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. For ticket information, please call the IceRays at 361.814.PUCK (7825) or visit them online at www.goicerays.com.
