October 22, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi- The Corpus Christi IceRays are joining with the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse to promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles during Red Ribbon Week 2002. Members of the IceRays will be visiting local elementary schools in the Corpus Christi area this week to speak to children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

The IceRays will visit Los Encinos Elementary School (1826 Frio Street) on Wednesday, October 23rd and conduct a presentation to the school's 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders beginning at 1:30PM in the cafeteria. On Thursday, October 24th, the IceRays will visit Gibson Elementary School (5723 Hampshire Road) and give two 30-minute presentations beginning at 1PM. Among those IceRays expected to attend are Kenny Goetz, Russell Hogue, Joe Savioli, and Trent Brandvold.

"The IceRays are always looking to give back to the community, and there's no better way to do that than to educate young kids about staying in school and staying away from drugs and alcohol," said Director of Public Relations Dan Weiss. "Many kids in Corpus Christi see the IceRays as role models so by being apart of Red Ribbon Week, hopefully we can provide a positive influence."

The first Red Ribbon Celebration was organized in 1986 by a grassroots organization of parents concerned about the destruction caused by alcohol and drug abuse. The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol of the movement in honor of Enrique Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped and killed while investigating drug traffickers. The campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and has been recognized by the U.S. Congress.
