Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The Corpus Christi IceRays scored the opening two goals, but surrendered the next five tallies as the Amarillo Bulls swept the Rays, 5-2, at the American Bank Center on Saturday night. Win the win, Amarillo improves their record to 17-5-1 (35 points) overall while the IceRays fall to 11-14-2 (24 points).

Beau Walker and Colton Saucerman had the tallies for Corpus Christi and Jordan Miller won a clean fighting decision in third period.

Corpus Christi came out flying in the first period, attacked at every opportunity, and collected an early 2-0 lead. The first goal came from Walker (9) on the backhand from the slot at the 5:58 mark to put the IceRays on top, 1-0. The lead was extended to 2-0 when Saucerman (1) blasted one from the point past Steve Bolton on the power play at the 13:14 mark. Walker and Navarone Copley assisted on the two-man advantage tally. Amarillo changed the momentum with two late goals to tie the game at 2-2 after 20 minutes of play. The goals came from Cody Freeman (13, 16:27) and Ricky DeRosa (6, 19:25). Saucerman left the game with a concussion after a hard collision into the boards for which Dan Sherer received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Shots were 14-12 in favor of Corpus Christi.

The IceRays could not convert early in the second period on the ensuing three-minute power play. Amarillo used the penalty kill to their advantage and at the 8:33 mark Zack Smoot (11) put the Bulls ahead, 3-2. The even-strength goal was assisted by Cody Freeman. The second period ended with that score with Amarillo outshooting the IceRays 9-5.

Amarillo added two more goals, one from Joe Kozlak (7, 9:19) and one from Matt Johnson (10, 10:23) to extend their final winning margin to 5-2. Corpus Christi had a Cody Milligan potential goal waved off after it was deemed he threw the puck into the net. The lone bright spot of the period for the IceRays was Miller, who scored a TKO of Gunnar Dirks as the two dropped the mitts. Final shots were 32-28 for the IceRays. Corpus Christi went 1-5 on the power play while Amarillo went 0-4.
