Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
The Corpus Christi IceRays finished a three-game homestand on Thursday night in the same fashion it began last weekend - with a blow out win. Six different IceRays scored in a 6-1 rout over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The IceRays won their fourth straight home game, and fifth of the last six overall. The IceRays improved to 24-21-7 on the season, and five points ahead of Rio Grande Valley for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. They also inched within six points of the Texas Brahams and four points of the Laredo Bucks for the third spot in the South, setting up Friday's matchup in North Richland Hills. The IceRays will hit the road to close out the remainder of the weekend. On Friday night they'll travel to face the Texas Brahmas at 7:05pm, and then on Saturday they'll visit Rio Grande Valley at 7:35pm. For the third straight came the IceRays dominated play in the opening period. Corpus Christi seized immediate control of the game with four unanswered goals. Chad Woollard got it started with his CHL-leading 36th goal from the slot at 3:56 to make it 1-0. Nearly four minutes later R.G. Flath scored on a rebound at 7:54 to make it 2-0 IceRays. At 10:53 Chris Richards took control while shorthanded after a giveaway by Rio Grande Valley's Nathan Ansell and beat Andy Franck into the top left corner to extend the lead to 3-0. Adam Powell scored a two-man advantage goal at 16:02 to cap the period. The IceRays outshot the Bees 12-5, and have now outscored their opponents 10-1 in the first period over their three-game winning streak.
The second period was more evenly played as the teams traded goals. Corpus Christi made it 5-0 when Flath set up Morgan MacLean on the doorstep for the rookie's eighth goal of the year at 10:47. The Bees finally broke onto the scoreboard at 19:29 when Nathan Ansell scored with a slapshot from the blue line on a four-on-three power play. The goal stopped a stretch of 14 unanswered IceRays goals versus their opponents. The Rays outshot the Bees 10-8 in the frame.
Steve Later scored the only goal of the third on the power play to make it 6-1 IceRays. At 10:53, he blistered a slapshot past Franck from the left point.
Kevin Beech (13-5-3) earned his fifth straight win, making 21 saves on 22 shots. Andy Franck (13-17-6) took the loss making 26 saves on 32 shots. The IceRays power play went 2-7 and the Bees went 1-7. The IceRays outshot the Bees 32-22 in the game.
