Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- With 7,605 fans packed inside the Ford Center, the Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light, joined the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support the fight against cancer with the team's Pink the Rink Night. In front of a crowd full of cancer survivors and their loved ones, the IceMen (12-26-4-2, 30 points) ended up falling to the Gwinnett Gladiators by a 5-3 final.
Gwinnett gained the lead first. Brendan Walker found Geoff Paukovich at the side net. Paukovich slid it into the net to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead.
Just 40 seconds later, the IceMen fought back. Colin Murray dished the puck to Myles Bell who blasted a slap shot at the net that Kent Patterson turned away. Daniel Johnston tracked down the rebound and blistered a shot as he was falling to the ice to tie the game at one.
Early in the second period, Evansville took the lead. Robin Soudek zipped a cross crease feed to Thomas Frazee. Frazee banged the puck in to give the IceMen a 2-1 lead. Brandon Martell picked up his second assist of the week on Frazee's second IceMen goal. Frazee has a point in each of his first three IceMen games.
The Gladiators responded with two goals. Will McDonald and Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored to give Gwinnett a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission.
Gwinnett struck twice in the first 1:32 of the third period. Walker lit the lamp 15 seconds into the frame. Shortly after Nathan Burns scored to give the Gladiators a 5-2 lead.
With under six minutes left, the IceMen rallied. Peter Sakaris drove the puck towards the front of the net. His shot was stopped by Patterson, but Jim McKenzie rifled in the rebound to cut the Gladiator lead to two. Jarret Lukin assisted on McKenzie's fourth goal of the season.
By the end of the night, the IceMen fired a season high 43 shots at Patterson, but the Gwinnett goalie stopped 40 of them to earn the win. Chris Driedger took the loss for Evansville.
Evansville will play the Indy Fuel on Friday Feb. 6 at 7:15 p.m. It will be Heart Night at the Ford Center. The IceMen will wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game.
