PORT HURON, MI - The Flint Generals edged the Port Huron Icehawks 2-1 on Friday in a defensive battle at McMorran Arena.

The defeat snapped a five game winning streak for the Icehawks and handed them their first loss in regulation since December 21. The Icehawks fall to 24-13-1-0 on the International Hockey League season, but remain five points in front of the second place Kalamazoo Wings, who were shutout tonight by Fort Wayne. The win also snapped a three game losing streak for the fifth place Generals (13-24-2-2).

The first goal of the game came more than thirty minutes in, when Icehawks center Nick Lindberg scored on assists from Jamie Carroll and Daniel Tetrault at 11:18 in the second period. The Generals tied the game just over five minutes later when Kyle Deck fired a shot past goalie Larry Sterling.

The eventual game winner came with just eight minutes left to play in the third period when Flint's Steve Rymsha capitalized on a 5-on-3 man advantage and scored his 26th goal of the season. Prior to the goal, Port Huron's Tab Lardner lost his stick and Deck knocked it down the ice, leaving just two Icehawks players to kill the penalty. There was no call on the play as the stick was apparently broken.

The Icehawks were outshot 36 -29 in the loss, including a margin of 13-6 in the first period. Both goalies turned in solid games between the pipes. Sterling stopped 34 of 36 shots faced, while Flint's Chad Alban made 28 saves on 29 shots. The Icehawks could not capitalize on the power play, despite four opportunities. The Generals were 1-4 on the power play.

The Icehawks wrap up a three game home-stand tomorrow with a visit from the Fort Wayne Komets. The game will finish off a day of hockey action that includes a visit from the Stanley Cup and a game between the Detroit Red Wings Alumni and Port Huron pro hockey alumni.
