Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators hit the road again on Tuesday and took on the Columbus Cottonmouths. This game pitted two teams that are at the bottom of the Southern Professional Hockey League standings. The Cottonmouths were able to take advantage of a few 'Gators mistakes and win 3-1 and continue the IceGators losing streak.
The opening period began slowly. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal until the 15:58 mark when Matt Kinnunen (COL) had the first shot on goal, but the goals started coming quicker after that shot. During a three-minute stretch, the IceGators had six straight shots on goal but none of them got past Ian Vigier (COL), the Cottonmouths goalkeeper. Scott Darling (LOU) was equally up to the task when he saved each of the nine shots that Columbus had on goal.
During the first period the IceGators outshot the Cottonmouths 12-9, but the second period went differently. In the second period Columbus outshot the 'Gators 15-7. With 14:15 remaining in the period the Cottonmouths began a stretch of 13 unanswered shots on goal. In the middle of the stretch Mitch Wall (COL) scored the first goal of the game with 9:51 left in the period.
The third period began with the IceGators on a power play. Dennis Sicard (LOU) was called for high sticking with :52 left in the second period. The 'Gators were able to kill the power play but gave up a goal as soon as it ended. Daryl Moore (COL) put he Cottonmouths up 2-0. Nick Vandenbeld (LOU) would cut the lead in half when he scored with 15:28 remaining in the period. Less than four minutes later, Moore scored his second goal of the period and put Columbus up 3-1.
"Mental mistakes just keep haunting us," answered interim Head Coach Chris Valicevic after lose. "We have to stay focused and not make the same mistakes each game. We are one or two mistakes away from ending this streak."
