Louisiana IceGators News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.--The Louisiana IceGators' most recent win streak ended just as quickly as it began.
One night after shaking off a three-game skid by beating Columbus, the IceGators stumbled to a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Mississippi RiverKings.
The IceGators and the RiverKings meet again Sunday afternoon in the Lafayette Cajundome. Game time is set for 3:05 p.m.
"We were outworked tonight, and we never got any momentum," said IceGators head coach Drew Omicioli. "Our game plan was to play the way we played against Columbus and simplify the back end. We did the opposite.
"Mississippi knows how to outwork and out-battle us, and this is what they do to a 'T.' You have to give them credit. They have our number this year, and it's strictly based on them wanting it more than us."
The RiverKings took control of the game early.
Devin Mantha scored the only goal of the first period on a power play at the 9:23 mark of the frame. Dan Delisle tacked on another goal 1:53 into the second period.
The IceGators cut their deficit to one when Tanner Burton poked the puck just over the goal line at the 6:38 mark of the second period.
The RiverKings' defense dominated the third period, holding the lethargic IceGators offense to only five shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of play.
Omicioli says his squad needs to climb out of its funk quickly to have any chance to win Sunday's rematch.
"We need to come out (Sunday) and stick to the game plan and have the will and desire to get our hands dirty and win every battle," Omicioli said. "If we do that, I'm confident that the result will be positive. If we play like we did tonight, we'll get the same result."
