Pensacola, Florida--The Louisiana IceGators struggles against the Pensacola IceFlyers continued Friday. Despite having an early lead, the Gators fell to the Flyers 5-3. Pensacola outshot Louisiana 31-17 in the final two periods. In addition, the IceFlyers converted both of their powerplay opportunities during the contest.
I don t know how we go from playing a very smart, simple road game in the first period to giving up 42 overall shots, said IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski. I guess it might be the 52 turnovers we had. He then added, Our puck management in the was terrible the last two periods.
Louisiana jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Shawn McNeil scored off of a Jason Hill assist. Pensacola dominated the second period, scoring twice on 19 shots. The first goal was scored by Chris Wilson on the IceFlyers first powerplay of the night. Donnie Harris tacked on another just a few minutes later to give Pensacola its first lead of the night. The IceGators tied the game midway through the third on a Josh Boyd goal. However, Pensacola would respond with two goals of their own. Matthew Robertson scored the go-ahead goal on a powerplay, while Andrew Harrison made it 4-2 when he scored almost 90 seconds later. McNeil scored his second goal of the night with 48 seconds remaining in the game to pull the IceGators within a goal of another tie. The IceFlyers added an insurance goal with two seconds remaining in the contest when Robertson scored on an empty net.
According to Kaminski, the IceGators created most of their own problems. We lost a lot of one-on-one battles, he said. We also took a bad offensive zone penalty that cost us the game. We shot ourselves in the foot big time tonight.
The IceGators close out the regular season Saturday night when they take on the Mississippi Surge in Biloxi. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 P. M. IceGator playoff tickets are onsale now.
