Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors had their backs against the wall this evening, trailing the visiting Niagara IceDogs 3-0 in their 1st round playoff match-up. Unfortunately, the series trend continued this evening as the Majors started the game strong before the IceDogs took over midway through and skated off with the win. This time it was by a 6-3 count with the IceDogs completing a sweep of the Majors.

The Majors carried the play in the 1st period, outshooting the IceDogs 10-5 and potting a pair of goals. Mike Pelech and Kaspars Daugavins provided the tallies at 17:34 (power-play) and 18:16, respectively, with the assists getting credited to Daugavins, Casey Cizikas and Cameron Gaunce.

However, Niagara quickly got back into the game early in the 2nd period when Alex Pietrangelo and Chris DeSousa collected goals at 1:30 and 1:59 off of Stefan Legein and Matt Corrente support. Then, Legein provided another backbreaker, similar to his shorthanded goal late in game #2's 2nd period, when he scored on a shorthanded, penalty shot at 17:49 to put the visitors up 3-2.

The trend continued in the 3rd period as the Majors quickly got themselves into penalty trouble and the IceDogs capitalized. Luca Caputi's power-play goal at 4:15 made it 4-2; Andrew Merrett added a fifth tally at 10:20; and, Legein grabbed another shorthanded goal at 15:02. The assists on these goals went to Swift (2), Pietrangelo, Caputi and Jordan Foreman.

Casey Cizikas scored his first career playoff goal on the power-play at 18:32, after tipping a Matt Russo point shot, to give the home squad a bit of life. However, that was as close as the Majors could get.

Chris Carrozzi made 21 saves for Mississauga while Niagara's Sebastian Dahm continued his fine play with 30 stops. The Majors power-play was 2 for 9 while the IceDogs went 1 for 3. The game's three stars were Legein (1st), Daugavins (2nd) and Caputi (3rd).
