Alpena IceDiggers News Release

The Team Toledo IceDiggers won all three of their games this past weekend at the first annual Mercyhurst College Showcase.

The tournament's junior division featured the St. Catharines Falcons (Golden Horseshoe Hockey League) and the Owen Sound Greys (Midwestern Junior B Hockey League) both from Ontario, Canada and the IceDiggers. The showcase also featured a midget-aged division hosting teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario.

Center Eric Giosa scored the game-winner in a shootout to solidify the victory on Saturday night when Toledo beat Owen Sound by a score of 5-4. Toledo blew a 3-1 lead late in the game until Jeremy Barber scored the game-tying goal with 1:38 remaining in regulation. Other Toledo goal scorers were Nick Kulas, Jake Hovick and Giosa. Rookie goaltender Derek Szesny was solid in the first period and a half stopping 13 of 14 shots. Hovick also scored for Toledo in the shootout.

In the first of two games on Sunday, Toledo again defeated Owen Sound, this time by a score of 2-1. Left winger Paul Scalici scored both goals for Toledo. Veteran goaltender Justin Marriott shutout the Greys in his period and a half of play, stopping all 14 shots he faced.

In the late game on Sunday, Toledo beat St. Catharines 4-1 in a game marred by fights. Toledo scorers included Charlie Ross, Ross Enmark, Scalici and Barber. Both teams received seven major penalties each for fighting.

Toledo faces the Cleveland Barons in exhibition play this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Toledo Ice House.
