IceDiggers come back to drop Phantoms 5-4

Alpena MI: Carl Nielsen made a great first impression on his new teammates and the 920 fans who came out tonight to Northern Lights Arena to see the Alpena IceDiggers defeat the Mahoning Valley Phantoms for the first time in six tries this season. Alpena scored three 3rd period goals to drop the first place club by a score of 5-4.

The Lorain OH native was traded to Alpena from the Columbus Jr. Blue Jackets (CSHL) on Thursday and made his Junior "A debut a good one, Nielsen came off the bench to gather the loose puck off the wall and ripped a slap shot high over Phantoms goalie Ryan Zapolski with just under ten minutes to go in the game.

Todd Rudasill (Powell OH) added a goal an two assists tonight, Alpena's own Erik Peterson tied the game at four with a powerplay marker, Peterson also added an assist on the game winner. Drew Pierson chipped in three assists. Captain Nolan Craner (Plainwell MI) had a goal and an assist apiece. Jimmy McCusker (Novi MI) scored his 4th goal of the season. Veteran center Kerry Bence (St. Clair MI) had one assist.

Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Hts. MI) picked up his team high 15th victory of the season making 33 stops on 37 shots.
