January 13, 2007 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Traverse City North Stars News Release
ANN ARBOR - One night after the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 squad suffered its first North American Hockey League loss in nearly two years, the Under-18s struck back.
Employing a shoot-first, ask questions later approach, the host 18s scored early - including two in the first three minutes of play - and often, in a 7-3 win over the Traverse City North Stars at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Team USA rattled off an astounding 58 shots, keeping Stars netkeep Martin Iberer busy, while Ryan Hayes dished out four assists and scored another.
"It was a 4-3 game with around 14-15 minutes to go, so we hung in there with âem again," explained North Stars coach Scott Gardiner. "They popped in a couple of quick ones there down the stretch, but we didn't stay out of the penalty box, an these guys are just too skilled to give them too many power play chances."
After the hosts' initial flurry, Mike Glaesmer got Traverse City on the board a half-minute later on assists from Patrick Nagorsen and Nick Von Bokern. Ben Plocar knotted the contest at 2-2 a mere :48 into the second period, but Hayes and Matt Rust levied successive markers to close the stanza for the 18s.
Matt Hughes provided the final gasp for TC, scoring a power play goal about four minutes into the third, but a trio of unrequited lamplighters for the hosts closed the game out.
Traverse City (13-21-5) jumps from the frying pan against the Team USA-18s, into the fire next week, visiting the NAHL-leading Mahoning Valley Phantoms for a two-game set at the Boardman IceZone. The club returns to Centre ICE arena for a Jan. 26-27 set against the Team USA Under-17 squad.
