WORCESTER, MA â St. Louis Blues Senior Vice President and General Manager/Worcester IceCats General Manager of Hockey Operations Larry Pleau announced today the IceCats have signed defenseman Mike Mottau and forwards Troy Riddle, Jeff Hoggan, Mark Jerant to AHL contracts. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not released.
A native of Quincy, Massachusetts and former Boston College standout, Mottau (motto) skated last season with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks where he was second among defensemen with 22 assists and 31 overall points. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the 10th round in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, the 26 year old was the 1999-2000 Hobey Baker Award winner as the top collegiate hockey player in his senior season at BC. In 271 career AHL games, his totals show 34 goals, 127 assists and 218 penalty minutes: 271(34/127/161)218. Mottau has also participated in 23 NHL games, 19 with the Rangers and four with the Calgary Flames. He has three NHL assists and 13 PIM's, all during his time in New York.
Drafted by the Blues in the fourth round with their fifth overall selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Riddle has played the last four seasons at the University of Minnesota. The 5-10, 175 pound right winger finished his collegiate career with 178 points, including 82 goals, ranking him 13th all-time on Minnesota's career points list. The 23 year old is 10th all-time with 82 goals. The Minneapolis native won back to back NCAA National titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03, the first as a teammate of current IceCats forward Johnny Pohl.
A native of Hope, British Columbia, Hoggan skated in 77 games with the Houston Aeros last season. He recorded career highs with 21 goals, 15 assists, 36 points and 88 penalty minutes: 77(21/15/36)88. A member of the 2002-03 Calder Cup Champion Houston Aeros, the 6-0 180 pound played three seasons from 1999-2002 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, amassing 52 goals and 47 assists along with 252 penalty minutes in 117 career games: 117(52/47/99)252
A 6-5, 205 pound native of Gross Point Shores, Michigan, Jerant appeared in 26 games for the Hershey Bears and 13 games for the Elmira Jackals (UHL) last season. He notched two assists and 72 penalty minutes with Hershey and one goal, two assists and 26 PIM's with Elmira. The left winger has played 12 games with the Dayton Bombers (ECHL) in 2002-03 and enjoyed his best season as a professional in 2001-02 while with the Port Huron Border Cats (UHL).
The IceCats home opening game for the 2004-2005 season is Saturday, October 16th at 7:05 PM against the Springfield Falcons.
