Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

There were plenty of goals in the third period Saturday, but not enough of them for the Waterloo Black Hawks, as the Indiana Ice skated away with a 5-4 decision at Young Arena.

Entering the final frame with the Ice up by one, Mikhail Plotnikov added to the lead with his second of the game at 1:59 after a turnover in the neutral zone. The Hawks rallied to tie it before the five minute mark; Vince Hinostroza sent a shot off of Dalton Izyk at 3:23 for his second of the night, then Jake Horton banked in an opportunity from behind the net at 4:30.

Indiana went back ahead for good when Plotnikov fed Drew Smolcynski for a two-on-one score 42 seconds later. Austin Ortega added another with 3:34 remaining, which proved to be the winner. Mark Friedman answered with 1:18 to go, banging in a rebound, but the Hawks could not manage to find the net again as Izyk made 36 stops.

A rebound laying on the goal line created the opportunity for the first Hawks goal of the contest. Just 4:05 after the opening faceoff, Hinostroza banged in the loose puck to give Waterloo a lead they held through the mid second period.

For the second consecutive night, Indiana won the middle frame. The visitors tied the score at 12:11 when Plotnikov got around a defender and beat Cal Petersen with a shot to the glove side. Then on a power play with two minutes remaining before intermission, Ortega teed up a puck to the top of the crease for Robbie Bailargeon to bang into the net.

Friday Indiana topped the Hawks 4-3 under similar circumstances, behind 38 saves by Izyk and three third period goals.

The Hawks hit the road next weekend for two games against the Tri-City Storm in Kearney, Nebraska. The final Waterloo home game before Christmas is on Saturday, December 22nd against the Sioux City Musketeers.
